How Many Racist Symbols and Hate Groups are all Around You?

Have you ever gone shopping while on vacation and entered a shop or building that gave you a strange feeling?

I am talking about the feeling that (most non-racist) human beings would have, if they saw an item for purchase (hat, beach towel, coffee mug, etc.) that had an extreme racial expression written on it or a swastika!

There are numerous racist, anti-Semitic and anti-Christian symbols that express HATE GROUPS' ideologies.

You can make yourself aware of your surroundings by learning to recognize these symbols the same way that racists use symbols as a way of identifying with others—who share their same extremist and hateful mentality.

A way to Recover from the Reality of Racism

Barry Stone, the publisher of Forget Race™ developed this blog after taking a "searching and fearless moral inventory" of himself. Does this sound familiar?Probably because, Barry spent time many years ago around a 12-Step fellowship. Since that time, Barry has used the principles of the Twelve Steps to reshape his way of thinking and personal life to include improved: self esteem, faith, self image, and his relationships with his family and others in society.

Barry found early on in his adult life that his ideologies were shaped by the nuances of racism in all its forms —stereotypes, profiling, favoritism, distrust and many other negative assumptions of other ethnic groups. He says, "Remember the old saying...When you assume, you make an Ass out of U [you] and Me?"

Barry believes that we all suffer from even the most subtle traces of racism (consciously or subconscious)—the feeling of inferiority or superiority at certain times in our life. However, Mr. Stone believes that all human beings can recover from the reality of racism, once we get honest with ourself.

Barry replied in his written interview response to my report questions that: "Recovery from negative social attitudes, and the ability to accept one's self often extends to acceptance of others, and their freedoms (no matter race, nationality, religion, skin color, gender, sexual orientation, etc.)...It is the key to equality!"

"It is real simple! If people wake up in the morning with the belief that they are not better than or worse than other people, our world would be a better place," says Stone. "Even radicals and extremist can recover from racist attitudes and behavior using a Twelve Step philosophy," he exclaims.

Stone continues, "It is harder for many people who belong to hate groups because they may be afraid to go it alone." "Most hate groups operate by persuading their members to be resentful and jealous of other people—who they deem as 'not deserving,' or perceive as unjustifiably living a privileged life."

Stone sums up his argument against extreme racists as follows..."How can one ethnic group consider its race supreme, when America has always been a 'Melting Pot?" "If it were not for the influences and achievements of people from diverse ethnic groups, we might be still living in the Dark Ages."

Stone goes on to say, "If you were to go in to a white supremacist house and take a physical inventory, the White Supremacist would be embarrassed by the discovery of how many products that they need and use that are made by Black, Asian, Latin or Jewish manufacturing companies." "I do not think their reliance upon people of color Is a 'love hate relationship,' I honestly believe these 'Hate Mongers' have not fully thought through their racists' positions." "They do not want to admit that there are many people of ethnic descent, other than Anglo, who have a higher IQ, ingenuity and social economic status."

Stone's own teenage son suggests, "that if a group wants to be supreme, they should move to their own [fully self-supporting] island, and not rely upon the resources of this [multi-ethnic and multi-cultural] country." "That is an amazing and promising viewpoint coming from a teenager," says Stone.

"Remember the Back-to-Africa movement of the 1920s" "Although several Blacks migrated back to West Africa, many former slaves, especially in the North, remained in America." "Garveyism inspired separatists organizations like the Nation of Islam." "However, wanna be separatists who reside in America know they cannot survive on their own. They must rely upon and financially patronize the very same people they supposedly oppose."

Stone wrote the following remarks, "I believe that former slave owners and Nazis have passed down a 'legacy of resentment' towards other human beings that they have not been able to capitalize off...since the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment, D-Day of June 6, 1944, and the onset of the Civil Rights movement!"

Below is the Twelve Steps. The First Step has been revised countless times over the years to fit the primary objectives of each diverse 12-Step fellowship that has sprung up around the world...

...Here, Barry Stone has revised the First Step for individuals who are honest enough to admit that even the most basic form of racism, prejudice, exist in all of us. Stone believes that through self awareness and a vigilant, daily effort, the Twelve Steps are a way to achieving a true attitude of equality.

"The only difference between the average person and a member of a hate group, is that the normal, decent human being, does not try to cause harm to others politically or physically," says Stone.

"Try using the principles of the Twelve Steps in your life and look up the 'Serenity Prayer' to use as another tool each day," Stone suggests. "And, remember! You can start your day over at anytime."

THE TWELVE STEPS OF RIDDING RACISM

(Step One revised for people of any ethnicity):

1. We admitted we were powerless over our own innate beliefs and stereotypes—that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
